Social Media Marketing for Authors: Where to Start
By Toheeb A., founder of TopsyQuill
Social media lets authors meet readers directly. You do not need to be everywhere; you need to be consistent where your readers already spend time.
1. Pick one or two platforms
TikTok (BookTok) and Instagram (Bookstagram) are strong for fiction, especially romance, fantasy and young adult. Facebook groups and LinkedIn often suit non-fiction and business books. Start small and do it well.
2. Share more than "buy my book"
Mix your posts: behind-the-scenes writing, favourite quotes, character moods, reader reactions and short videos about the themes of your book. Promotion works better when people already enjoy your content.
3. Use short video
Short videos reach new people on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. A book trailer, a 15-second hook from chapter one or a "if you liked X, read this" video are easy places to start.
4. Work with readers and influencers
BookTok creators, Bookstagrammers and book bloggers already have the readers you want. Reach out politely, offer a free copy and let them share honest opinions.
5. Build a community you own
Invite followers to your email newsletter, for example with a free short story or bonus chapter. Social platforms change, but your email list stays yours.
6. Plan a posting calendar
Decide how often you can post and stick to it, especially in the weeks around a launch. Check which posts bring clicks and do more of those.
