Book Cover Design Tips That Help Your Book Sell
By Toheeb A., founder of TopsyQuill
Readers do judge a book by its cover, often in under a second while scrolling. A good cover tells them the genre, sets the mood and makes them want to click.
1. Match your genre
Thrillers, romance, fantasy and non-fiction each have their own look. Study the best-selling covers in your category and make sure yours sends the same signals, while still standing out.
2. Make the title readable as a thumbnail
Most readers first see your cover as a small image on Amazon or social media. Use a bold, clear font and check that the title is still readable when the cover is shrunk down.
3. Keep one strong focal point
A single striking image, figure or symbol works better than a crowded scene. Simple covers are easier to remember and look better in ads.
4. Use colour with purpose
Colour sets the emotion: dark tones for suspense, warm tones for romance, clean bright tones for self-help. Make sure the title contrasts clearly with the background.
5. Prepare both ebook and print versions
Print covers need a spine and back cover sized to your page count. Use high-resolution files and check KDP's cover size requirements before uploading.
6. Test before you launch
Show two or three options to readers in your genre and ask which they would click. Your cover then becomes the base for ads, social posts and your book trailer.
