Amazon KDP Book Promotion: A Practical Guide for Authors

By Toheeb A., founder of TopsyQuill

Publishing on Amazon KDP puts your book in the world's largest bookstore, but being listed is not the same as being found. These are the steps that matter most when promoting a KDP book.

1. Choose keywords readers actually type

KDP lets you add seven keyword slots. Use them for phrases a reader would search, such as a sub-genre, a theme or a reader problem, not words already in your title.

Look at Amazon's search suggestions and at similar books in your genre to see which phrases come up again and again.

2. Pick precise categories

Broad categories are crowded. Narrower, accurate categories help your book appear next to the books your readers already buy. Choose categories that truly describe your book so readers are not disappointed.

3. Write a book description that sells

Open with a strong hook, introduce the main conflict or promise, and end with a clear reason to buy. Keep paragraphs short so the description is easy to read on a phone.

4. Complete your Amazon Author Central profile

Add a clear photo, a short bio and links to all your books. A complete author page builds trust and helps readers find your other titles.

5. Gather honest reviews

Advance reader copies (ARC), book bloggers and reader newsletters are common ways to get early reviews. Always follow Amazon's review rules: never pay for or trade reviews.

6. Test Amazon Ads carefully

Start with a small daily budget, track which keywords lead to sales, and pause the ones that only spend money. Ads work best once your cover, description and reviews are ready.
